Brussels Sprout Stalk

Brussels Sprout Stalk

Posted July 23, 2009 in Food, Moleskine, Trees & Plants

3" x 5", pen & pencil crayon

This past fall I finally got a chance to see what Brussels Sprouts look like when they grow.  It was a complete revelation to see that they grow with a slight spiral twist on stalks. I did a quick sketch of it in my new Moleskine sketchbook at the time and only just got around to completing it recently.  You could say that I was kind of too chicken to mar the new Moleskine, but now I'm over it.

I cook my Brussels Sprouts cut in half and braised in a bit of water until just tender.  Then I saute them with some salted butter and a bit of the remaining cooking liquid until they're cooked through.  Sprinkled with a bit of salt and pepper they taste amazingly fresh and delicious and not overcooked and sulphurous.
